Meerlust Estate celebrated 50 years of wine production under its own label with a commemorative function on 8 August 2025. Michael Fridjhon, veteran journalist, judge and wine aficianado gave a wonderful keynote address, contextualising history and the wine industry and the Myburgh family. Kudos to Hannes Myburg, current custodian and son of Nico Myburgh, who had the vision for Meerlust but sadly died before he could see its great successes.

With its unique combination of soils, sites and skilled winemakers, Stellenbosch is establishing itself as the ‘Kingdom of Cabernet’ in the South African winelands. Cabernet Sauvignon from this historic wine-growing region was one of the star attractions at the Cape Wine 2015 trade show held in September 2015. Wine.co.za visited Meerlust to find the first of their red grapes coming in to be de-stemmed.  Meerlust is on the R310 near Stellenbosch and usually the white grapes are the first to be harvested, and these were the first of the red to arrive at the cellar.
